Goddess Topiary

Directions

  1. Cut both of the larger styrofoam balls in half.

    Diagram 1

  2. Glue one half ball into the bottom of the flowerpot.

    Diagram 2

  3. Take two of the halves and cut off about 1/3 at the top. Snap a toothpick in half. Glue the half balls together at their narrow ends, using the toothpick halves to help keep them in place. This is the Goddess' waist.

    Diagram 3

  4. Snap another toothpick in half and glue the waist assembly to the wide end of the cone (again using toothpick halves to stabilize).

    Diagram 4

  5. Snap a third toothpick in half and glue the remaining half ball to the top (wide end of the ball).

    Diagram 5

  6. Glue the smaller ball to the top - this is the Goddess' head. This time use a whole toothpick.

  7. Cut the heart in half vertically.

    Diagram 7

  8. Glue each side of the heart to the Goddess as shown to make the arms. For each arm, use a whole toothpick. Be sure to use lots of glue here as this is the least stable part.

You can see that I didn't get my cuts perfect so there were some gaps. It doesn't matter -- the sheet moss covers it all up.

  9. Cut off the tip of the cone; insert the twig or dowel and glue in place.

    Diagram 9

  10. Glue the other end of the twig or dowel into the foam in the flowerpot.

    Diagram 10

  11. Glue moss in place in the flowerpot to conceal the foam.

    Diagram 11

  12. Cover the Goddess' body with sheet moss, using glue and (if desired) floral pins to hold it in place. The easiest way to do this is to cut or tear the sheet moss into pieces and glue them on one piece at a time. The edges blend together pretty easily.

The arms are the hardest part to cover. I cut long narrow pieces and glued them to the upper surface first, then wrapped them around to the underside and glued that and held it in place until it cooled. (This is where I probably would've gotten burnt if I'd used a high-temp glue gun).

NOTE: This part of the project is pretty messy! You will want to put down some newspaper or a drop cloth, or even work on it outdoors, as little bits of moss will be flying all over.

  13. (Optional) If you like, glue additional ornamentation onto the Goddess; a few ideas: You might even want to make her the main focus of a larger floral arrangement (in which case, you should probably use a bigger flowerpot, and anchor her with a good-sized block of floral foam).
